As we enter November, an extremely busy and positive week at Leith Academy. Some updates below;

S4,5,6 Parents’ Eve – This was a very positive evening where Families of Anderson and Barton House could speak to Teachers about what is going well and areas of focus as we head toward the prelim assessments in a few weeks. Our Cowan and Port House evening is on 12th Nov, booking details will be sent direct to Families in due course. The prelim timetable will be issued to pupils soon.

Phone pouches – These have been issued. The aim is to keep this simple, if a pupil brings a device to School, this goes in the pouch, and the pouch goes in their school bag. They can unlock as they leave the premises. Our young adults have adapted to this in a mature way, which helps their focus and learning in classes.

Firework Police Message – Families see important letter attached and discuss at home as needed, be aware of the serious consequences linked to inappropriate use of any kind.

Careers Fayre – This was a very successful event this week with 20+ partners talking to our S4,5,6 across a range of areas linked to the world of work. Pupils / Families should plan appointments with our Careers Advisor Giles Macnair giles.macnair@sds.co.uk to talk things over, if helpful.

Leith Town of Culture 2028 – As part of the Leith Community bid, we had a visit from Sir Phil Redmond. Those of a certain era will recall he directed Brookside and Grange Hill, to name a few. We hope his visit helps our great community of Leith have a successful bid Sir Philip Redmond visits area bidding to become Town of Culture in its 900th year | The Independent

Inter House Football – As ever, another highly contested event. Scores are in…..House points gained.

1st- Cowan 2nd-Barton 3rd- Port 4th- Anderson – well done to all players!

Youth Philanthropy Initiative – Our pupils meet charities in a speed date format, then they create a pitch to try and win £3000 for their chosen charity. We had a wide range of local charities in this week and our S3 asked particularly insightful questions.

Youth Film Club – We have an exciting opportunity launching soon for young people aged 12-15 in North Edinburgh to learn about filmmaking through a drop-in youth hub programme. The hub will take place at Screen Education Edinburgh, located at 30 Ferry Road Avenue, just a short bus ride from the school. You can find more information here: Free Youth Film Club in Edinburgh

Chinese delegation – We welcomed some colleagues to Leith this week to discuss Scotland’s approaches to online learning using iPads and online textbooks. The feedback was positive as we all learned about different educational approaches.

Have a safe and enjoyable SatOween weekend from all at Leith Academy.
