Home Economics Courses

 Broad General Education Home Economics

  • Practical Cookery & Food Technology: Pupils learn safe kitchen hygiene, basic equipment use, and hands-on preparation techniques (like chopping, baking, and controlling cooking processes).
  • Health & Nutrition: Instruction on understanding nutritional value, following the Scottish Dietary Targets, and addressing contemporary food issues.
  • Textiles & Resource Management: Often incorporated, teaching pupils basic consumer skills, budgeting, and hands-on fabric crafting or design. 

S3 Elective Health and Food

This course combines both Practical Cookery and Health and Food Technology to support pupils on the pathway to National courses in the senior phase.

Practical Cookery: Hospitality National 4/5

  • Cookery Skills & Processes: Mastering core methods such as boiling, sautéing, baking, and roasting.
  • Hygiene & Safety: Strictly adhering to food safety standards, knife drills, and cross-contamination prevention.
  • Organization: Planning logical sequences of work, coordinating timing across multiple dishes, and minimizing waste.
  • Ingredient Knowledge: Understanding sourcing, seasonality, costing, and dietary modifications. 

Health and Food Technology National 5/Higher

The course has five broad and inter-related aims that enable candidates to:

¨ analyse the relationships between health, nutrition and food

¨ develop and apply skills, knowledge and understanding related to the functional properties of food

¨ investigate contemporary issues affecting food and consumer choice

¨ use research, management and technological skills to plan, make and evaluate food products for a range of dietary and lifestyle needs

¨ prepare food using safe and hygienic practices to meet specific needs

Early Learning and Childcare

The “Skills for Work: Early Learning and Childcare” course is an introductory qualification designed to prepare individuals for careers in the childcare and early years sector. It focuses on building fundamental practical knowledge—such as child development and play planning—alongside essential employability skills like teamwork and self-evaluation. 

  • SCQF Level 4: An entry-level introduction covering basic practical skills, self-evaluation, and an understanding of workplace responsibilities.
  • SCQF Level 5: A more in-depth course that usually consists of mandatory and optional units. It covers topics like child wellbeing, play in childcare, and active preparation for entering the workforce
